How do cyber-attacks affect organisations? How does code shape the worlds we live? Can numbers help us predict the future? These are some of the big questions explored in the Computing and Mathematics Experience Days at Sheffield Hallam University.

 

Designed for Year 12 and Year 13 students, these immersive experience days introduce the ideas, technologies, and ways of thinking that underpin modern computing and mathematics. Each day is built around a single big question and invites students to explore it through hands-on activities, investigation, and discussion. Students step into the role of professionals working in areas such as cyber security, software development, game technologies, data science, and mathematics, gaining insight into how these disciplines help us understand, build, and protect the digital world.

Understanding data and predicting outcomes

 

Big Question:  Can numbers help us predict the future?

 

What Students Will Experience

Students will explore how mathematics and data are used to understand patterns and make predictions about the world around us. By working with real datasets and mathematical models, they will discover how analysts and mathematicians turn raw information into insights that can influence decisions in areas such as business, science, and society. Through practical activities, students will experience how mathematical thinking and data analysis combine to reveal patterns, test ideas, and make predictions about future outcomes.

 

Hands-On Activities

  • Data Investigation: Students will work with a real dataset and use data analysis tools to explore patterns, trends, and relationships within the data. They will learn how data scientists organise, visualise, and interpret information to identify insights that are not immediately visible.
  • Mathematical Modelling: Students will explore how mathematicians use formulas, models, and probability to represent real-world situations and make predictions. By testing different assumptions and analysing outcomes, they will see how mathematical reasoning can help forecast future events and support decision-making.

We recommend planning your travel arrangements in advance. As a city-centre university, we do not have on-site parking available; however, there are nearby privately owned car parks that we can direct you to.

 

For environmental reasons, and as we are conveniently located next to Sheffield train station and the Sheffield bus interchange, we encourage travel by public transport whenever possible.
