Computing and Mathematics Experience Days – Digital Security

31 31 people viewed this event.

How do cyber-attacks affect organisations? How does code shape the worlds we live? Can numbers help us predict the future? These are some of the big questions explored in the Computing and Mathematics Experience Days at Sheffield Hallam University.

Designed for Year 12 and Year 13 students, these immersive experience days introduce the ideas, technologies, and ways of thinking that underpin modern computing and mathematics. Each day is built around a single big question and invites students to explore it through hands-on activities, investigation, and discussion. Students step into the role of professionals working in areas such as cyber security, software development, game technologies, data science, and mathematics, gaining insight into how these disciplines help us understand, build, and protect the digital world.

Students will:

  • Experience hands-on computing and mathematics activities
  • Explore real-world digital challenges
  • Discover university pathways in computing and data
  • Gain insight into careers in the digital economy

Digital Security

Protecting organisations and infrastructure

Big Question: What really happens when a company gets hacked?

What Students Will Experience

This immersive experience day invites Year 12 and Year 13 students to explore what happens when a cyber-attack affects a modern organisation. In the first part of the day, students will step into the role of a Cyber Incident Response Team, investigating a suspected cyber incident and analysing digital evidence to understand what may have happened. In the second part of the experience, they will step into the role of business leaders, considering the wider consequences of the attack, including operational disruption, financial risk, and the leadership decisions required to recover and protect the organisation. This is further built upon by exploring how technology can be used to support business processes more widely

Hands-On Activities

  • Cyber Investigation: Students will use a range of professional tools and techniques to investigate a cyber-attack and understand how incidents are analysed and evidence is identified.
  • Business Impact and Recovery: Students explore how organisations respond to cyber-attacks, considering operational disruption, financial risk, and strategic decision-making. They will also exploring how digital technologies such as apps, data analytics, and information systems help organisations make smarter decisions, improve customer experiences, and work more efficiently.
