STUDENT LIFE
Where Will I Live?
Commuting
If moving out isn’t an option for you, you don’t need to worry about missing out on student life!
- Discounts on public transport with your student card
- Full access to sports clubs, societies and social opportunities
- You can always move out at a later date!
Halls of residence
Living in halls of residence is great fun and one of the best ways to meet other students.
- We guarantee to find you accommodation in your first year
- 15 different properties, varying in price and facilities, all within walking distance
How Will I Learn?
Lectures and seminars
Lectures are 1-2 hour sessions delivered by a lecturer, providing information on a topic. Seminars are smaller group sessions where topics are discussed in more detail.
Specialist facilities and spaces
Some courses will give you the opportunity to work in specialist locations such as, lab work on a bioscience course or practicing in our mock courtroom on a law degree.
Placements
Placements can last from 6 weeks to a full year during or after your second year (either in the UK or aboard). This allows you to explore a certain area or get a taste for your chosen career, as well as gaining some real life work experience.
How Can I Make Friends?
Many students worry about meeting new people and making friends while at university, but there’s lots of opportunities, both on your course and outside of university!
On course
- You’ll be meeting lots of new, like minded people on your course, all with shared interests but a variety of life experiences!
Accommodation
- Living with new people in halls of residence is a brilliant way to get to know people. You’ll always live with other Hallam students but from courses across the university.
Societies
- Societies can be related to a course area, music taste, religion, hobby or a specific appreciation, and we have lots to choose from! If you can’t find the one you want, we’ll help you start your own.
Sports
- At SHU we have lots of sports to get involved with, either socially or at a competitive level. You can continue and existing interest or try something completely new.
Sheffield as a student city
- Sheffield is know for its exciting music scene, its green spaces and opportunities for socialising. We have a range of bars, restaurants, cinemas, and more! The peak district is right on our door step too!
