IMA Festival 2022: IMA & MathsCareers

The Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) is the professional body and learned society for qualified and practising mathematicians and exists to support the advancement of mathematical knowledge and its applications and to promote and enhance mathematical culture with over 5,000 members, comprising of mathematicians from all sectors, as well as those with an interest in mathematics.

The IMA is very active in encouraging young people to consider careers in mathematics and related entry routes in the mathematical sciences, as well as supporting mathematics education at all levels. This includes closely monitoring the school curriculum and putting its views to Government and supporting teachers through the Chartered Mathematics Teacher (CMathTeach) designation. In addition, the IMA promotes mathematics at science fairs, conferences and through public engagement events to inspire the next generation.

MathsCareers is a popular mathematics careers website, averaging 40k visitors per month over many years. The site supports increasing maths education for all ages, from young students through to graduates and adult learners. We achieve this by encouraging readers to appreciate the ubiquity of mathematics in the everyday world.

MathsCareers provides specific support and encouragement for those who do not plan to go on to higher education. By focussing on the practical mathematics involved in activities such as learning a trade or running a business, we show that mathematics is still vital for those who may not consider themselves to be mathematically gifted.

For those who are planning a university career the site encourages the study of A-level maths. This helps general performance in higher education even in non-mathematical subjects. By highlighting the valuable role a Mathematics A-level can play in developing mathematical, logical, and analytical thinking skills, we hope to raise attainment by all graduates.

We work alongside wider university departments to ensure we provide the most consistent and comprehensive support for schools and colleges.
