Tour of the Materials and Engineering Research Institute (MERI)

Take a tour of our Materials and Engineering Research Institute, a cutting edge facility dedicated to addressing industrial problems and finding innovative solutions. From materials analysis to infrastructure management, the majority of our activities are focused on real commercial needs and many of our activities are sponsored by companies in sectors such as petrochemical, pharmaceutical, electronics, aerospace, automotive, biomedical and many more. You’ll get to see an exciting demonstration of what liquid nitrogen will do to everyday objects in a real life working laboratory.

Tour of the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre (BMRC)

Ever wondered what real laboratories look like? Come take a tour of the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre with Head of the Facility-Professor Malcolm Clench. The centre has an international reputation for the quality of its research, looking at areas such as cancer research, tissue engineering, mass spectrometry and disease mechanisms. You’ll get to see a skin section via a technique called DESI-MS- a chemical analysis tool utilised in forensics, environmental monitoring, pharmaceuticals and many more.

Zombie Outbreak!

Available times: 10:30, 11:30, 1:30, 2:30

There has been a reported outbreak of zombieism in the Sheffield area. This is caused by infection with the bacteria Pseudomonas zombieitis. Symptoms of infection include cold clammy green skin, blood shot eyes, light sensitivity and a runny nose. Residents are recommended to stay indoors after sunset.

It is your job as a scientist to help stop the zombie outbreak by examining patient samples in the laboratory so that we can diagnose who is infected, which treatment to use and stop the infection spreading further throughout the city.
