Explore! Science, engineering and more at Sheffield Hallam
Date: 18/03/2023
Time: 10am-4pm
Location: Sheffield Hallam University, City Centre, S1 1WB
Join us for our popular interactive family event as part of Science Week at Sheffield Hallam, and explore science, engineering and more!
This fantastic exhibition, delivered by staff and students, showcases research in biology, chemistry, forensic science, engineering and health.
There will be plenty to capture the imagination of all ages from hands-on activities to demonstrations, crafts and competitions.
Throughout the day we will host a series of mini talks celebrating women in STEM. Tours of the research centres and bookable mini masterclasses will also be available to book on the day. All activity is fun and accessible for all ages.
Explore the programme below or pre-register for fast-track entry. Don’t want to pre-register? Just turn up on the day!
Please note there may be queues for registration during busy periods.
We’ll have a range of exciting activities and stands to engage with on the day, including…
Biomolecular Science Research Centre
Unlock the secrets on fingerprints at our Chemistry stand, learn about brain activity at our health and disease stand, and much more!
Materials and Engineering Research Centre
Visit our stands to learn more about infrared technology, the auxetic effect, nano-sized materials and nuclear physics. There will also be chance to build a usable battery, create Lego models and much more!
Computing and Maths
Become an AI Analyst and help us investigate a crime or get hands on with projects from SHU’s own games studio!
Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions
Get involved with a giant operation game, handle a selection of surgical instruments or have a go at an airway simulation activity!
National Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering
Explore excellence in food engineering through activities including potato/lemon batteries, yeast fermentation and rice milling!
Food and Nutrition
Whiz popping Frobscottle or fizzy pop? Find out at our stall!
11am – Fingerprints: a molecular tale of yourself
So you think fingerprints are “just” a mesmerising pattern of lines? Think again! Those are much more than lines. What lies beneath is a mind blowing world of information about you. Listen to this talk and you’ll never touch anything again! Suitable for 10 years plus.
12pm – Net Zero transition: what is happening in energy sector
Net Zero, climate change, Rising energy cost, energy crisis…. we heard a lot about these from the news and media. But what is actually happening in energy sector in order to address these issues. Please join us to find out more. 10yrs+
1pm – Artificial Intelligence and social media: Should we understand Tik Tok?
Artificial Intelligence is a trendy word that everybody hears about but most people do not know what it is and where it is being used. One of the places we can find a lot of different artificial intelligence use is social media and in this talk we will discuss how this is done. Suitable for any age
2pm – 10 ways Geoscience can help save the planet!
When most people hear the word “Geology” they think “Rocks” – but the geosciences are so much more! Join volcano scientist Dr. Natasha Dowey to learn why geoscience is vital for a sustainable future on our planet, from finding minerals critical to electric cars and smartphones, to reducing the risk from hazards such as volcanic eruptions. Suitable for any age
3pm – Playing Games with Mathematics
Having good logical thinking skills can often give you an edge in winning at board and card games. Join mathematician Katie Steckles to find out about how mathematicians think, by dissecting some of your favourite toys and games, and looking at the ways maths allows us to understand the underlying structure and interpret what’s going on in the universe around us (and beat our friends at games!). Suitable for 10 years plus
All masterclasses and tours will be available to book on the day.
Tour of the Materials and Engineering Research Institute (MERI)
Available times: 11am, 12pm, 2pm, 3pm
Take a tour of our Materials and Engineering Research Institute, a cutting edge facility dedicated to addressing industrial problems and finding innovative solutions. From materials analysis to infrastructure management, the majority of our activities are focused on real commercial needs and many of our activities are sponsored by companies in sectors such as petrochemical, pharmaceutical, electronics, aerospace, automotive, biomedical and many more. You’ll get to see an exciting demonstration of what liquid nitrogen will do to everyday objects in a real life working laboratory.
Tour of the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre (BMRC)
Available times: 11am, 12pm, 2pm, 3pm
Ever wondered what real laboratories look like? Come take a tour of the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre with Head of the Facility-Professor Malcolm Clench. The centre has an international reputation for the quality of its research, looking at areas such as cancer research, tissue engineering, mass spectrometry and disease mechanisms. You’ll get to see a skin section via a technique called DESI-MS- a chemical analysis tool utilised in forensics, environmental monitoring, pharmaceuticals and many more.
All masterclasses and tours will be available to book on the day.
Zombie Outbreak!
Available times: 10:30, 11:30, 1:30, 2:30
There has been a reported outbreak of zombieism in the Sheffield area. This is caused by infection with the bacteria Pseudomonas zombieitis. Symptoms of infection include cold clammy green skin, blood shot eyes, light sensitivity and a runny nose. Residents are recommended to stay indoors after sunset.
It is your job as a scientist to help stop the zombie outbreak by examining patient samples in the laboratory so that we can diagnose who is infected, which treatment to use and stop the infection spreading further throughout the city.
