Physics Taster Days and Lab Practicals 2026-27
At Hallam our physics course focusses on creativity – whilst the tools of physics are often mathematical, the purpose of physics is discovery – to ask and answer interesting questions, and to do this we first need to dream them up. Students will have the opportunity to use the university’s labs and equipment to experience what studying Physics at university might be like.
Physics Taster Days
Our brilliant team of experts in this field can deliver tasters and talks covering:
- Micrometeorites
- The Mpemba Effect
- Escape from planet earth
- Building a cloud chamber
- Life as a photon
Support for Physics A-level practicals
We also currently offer the opportunity for schools and colleges to come onto campus and utilise our Physics lab and technical expertise, in order to aid you in the delivery of your Physics A-Level practicals for Y12 and Y13 students. We can support with the lab work required for a wide range of AQA and Pearson practicals.
We can accommodate a maximum of 30 students on taster days, and typically up to 15 students for our A-level labs sessions. Our set days are Fridays during teaching weeks, but can be more flexible in non-teaching weeks. We can often be flexible to meet your needs, so please get in touch with us via sclo@shu.ac.uk to discuss.

Travel
We recommend planning your travel arrangements in advance. As a city-centre university, we do not have on-site parking available; however, there are nearby privately owned car parks that we can direct you to.
For environmental reasons, and as we are conveniently located next to Sheffield train station and the Sheffield bus interchange, we encourage travel by public transport whenever possible.
