Introducing Orbyts—a multi-award-winning STEM research-with-schools programme that partners scientists with schools so students can contribute to real, cutting-edge research during the school year. We are looking for schools in Sheffield to work with researchers from Sheffield Hallam University.

What Orbyts is

A scientist (PhD/postdoc) works with a teacher and a group of students (year 10) on a live research question for 10–14 weeks, usually 1.5 hours per week, between November and June. Topics vary between researchers but could be physics, astronomy, chemistry, climate/earth, computing/data science, and more. After the project, students will present their work at a celebratory conference at Sheffield Hallam University to other students taking part and all the researchers involved.

Why it’s great for teachers and students

Students analyse real data, make discoveries, and present their findings. Evidence shows it is especially powerful for students who are underrepresented in STEM—raising confidence and aspiration. We provide a trained researcher, ready-made resources, and ongoing support. Teachers gain fresh subject knowledge, research skills, and evidence for appraisal/CPD.

What we ask from schools

Identify a lead teacher and an initial cohort (10-25 students, 50% female; 50% pupil premium) and liaise with the researcher to provide a regular weekly slot (after-school or timetabled). Support basic logistics/safeguarding; we handle researcher training, resources, and coordination.

Safeguarding & ethics

Orbyts follows robust safeguarding, data protection (GDPR), and research ethics procedures. All researchers are trained and work within your school’s policies.
