Discover our Computing and Digital Technology Experience Days

300 300 people viewed this event.

Step into the world of computing at Sheffield Hallam University, where every session puts cutting‑edge technology directly into your students’ hands. Whether they’re building robots, creating games, defending networks, or solving digital mysteries, each experience gives prospective students a real taste of what it’s like to study at Hallam.

These sessions aren’t about watching from the sidelines; they’re about doing, creating, and discovering where their future in tech could begin. Aimed at Y12/13 or L3 Y1/2 students..

Each day includes two masterclasses chosen from the areas below. To book a group or find out more, get in touch at sclo@shu.ac.uk. We run set dates throughout the year as outlined below, but we’re always happy to discuss alternative options if those don’t quite fit your schedule.

Cyber Security and Computer Networks

  • Get a behind‑the‑scenes look at how cyber‑attacks work and how professionals stop them. Students build and test a small computer network, experiment with real hardware, try beginner‑friendly hacking and defence techniques, and even use Kali Linux — the same penetration‑testing toolkit used by industry specialists.

Games Development

  • Students will dive into the world of game creation as they explore how games evolve from lines of code into fully playable worlds. They’ll get hands‑on in our PlayStation 5 development lab, experiment with real game engines, and try out coding tools to see how creativity and technical skills come together to bring games to life.

Computer Science

  • Build it, code it, and make it, move it! Students will use 3D printers to create custom parts for their very own Arduino-powered turtle-drawing robot and then create a program, so it springs into action! They’ll learn how coding, electronics, and engineering work together.

Digital Forensic

  • Students will become a digital detective for the day, analysing hidden data and uncovering digital clues like a real cybercrime investigator. Perfect for problem‑solvers who love cracking mysteries and staying curious.

Discover Tech That Means Business

  • Students will discover how technology solves real business problems as they step into the role of a tech consultant. Working in small teams, they’ll tackle a realistic business challenge, explore what customers and staff need, and design a digital solution using apps, websites, and data.

Maths

  • Students will discover how mathematical ideas drive modern technology, support data analysis, predict future trends, and help solve real-world challenges. They’ll gain insight into the diverse career paths unlocked by studying Maths and understand how the subject extends far beyond the classroom.
